Skunk's chemical defence
Skunks have evolved a unique approach to repelling other animals they consider to be pests. The strength and penetrating power of their spray is due to a family of chemicals known as "Mercaptans". These chemicals are among the most odorous known to man. They are also long lasting and extremely difficult to remove.
The advantage of the chemicals used in SkunkShot is that they are relatively non-toxic. While skunks cause various degrees of discomfort, their smell does not cause sickness. In fact a North American clergyman in the late 1800's found that the skunk?s odour was an effective cure for his asthma! He was only persuaded to discontinue his self medication when his congregation threatened a mass boycott of his services.
From chemistry to commercial productWith the development of SkunkShot, nature's most successful animal repellent has become a purchasable product. More than 20,000 units have been sold in the two years it has been available. So far only 0.5% of customers have reported problems with the product and in most cases this has been due to incorrect use.
While most New Zealanders have not seen or smelled a skunk, many are by now familiar with the distinctive odour of the skunk's chemistry through SkunkShot. Most of our customers' comments indicate how effective the product has been.
The fact that the chemicals in SkunkShot are the same as those developed in the natural evolution of the skunk, is viewed by gardeners as one of the product's main selling points.
